Cupid and Psyche

February 2019, Valentine’s Cupid and Psyche

Tuesday 12 February 2019, 12:00 – 14:00

Location: Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery

Cost: Free. Drop-in event.

Join us for a Valentine’s journey into the love story of Cupid and Psyche. We promise not to break your heart.

The story of Cupid and Psyche forms the centrepiece of the second-century Latin novel Metamorphoses, or “The Golden Ass”.

Join the beautiful princess Psyche through trials and tribulations involving jealous sisters, a husband of mysterious identity, and an epic-style journey to the Underworld. Will the princess unite with her true love? Explore illustrated versions of Apuleius’ epic love story from Special Collections to find out…

From Boccaccio’s Christian allegorical interpretation to sensuous Art Deco illustrations and William Morris’ beautiful woodcuts, samples of this well-known tale will be on display to read and explore.

Material in this month’s Tuesday Treasure has been selected by Dr Regine May, University of Leeds.

If you can’t make it in person several of these works have been photographed and are available through an online database. For more information and a link to the database see the Cupid and Psyche Project’s online resource page.
